When applied correctly, pine straw prevents evaporation of water from the soil, reduces the growth of weeds, and helps to prevent soil compaction and erosion. Pine straw also protects plants from freezing conditions, helping keep the soil around the plants at a stable temperature. This is important for newer plants and those with shallow root systems. Plus, pine straw will improve the soil structure as it decays.
mulch
Mulches help reduce evaporation from the sun which then decreases the need for watering.
Mulching also suppress weed growth naturally, lessening or eliminating the need for chemical herbicides.
Mulches also prevent sudden changes in soil temperature, which helps prevent tender premature growth during
winter warm spells.

Installation
OUR ABC's = T. R. B. FOR QUALITY, PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATIONS! STEP ONE: TUCK After the pine straw has been professionally installed, our 3-step clean-up process, known as T. R. B. begins. The TUCKING is performed using a shovel to ensure that the pine straw does not exceed its intended border. STEP TWO: RAKE The next step of T.R.B. is known as RAKE. Rakes are used to place any out-of-place straw back to the beds and off the grass or non-turf areas. STEP THREE: BLOW The last part of T.R.B. is known as BLOW. Blowers are used to leave the surrounding areas as well as the beds looking neat and pristine.

gravel
Gravel is an effective mulch for plants because it helps prevent evaporation from the soil surface and, unlike wood mulch, isn't prone to moving because of wind. Gravel that is 1/4 inch or smaller in diameter is moved more easily than larger gravel, so opt for medium-size gravel for flowerbeds and around trees.
